大奶福利姬 Strategic Plan: What鈥檚 New for 2018In 2010, the 大奶福利姬 (USM) launched a 10-year strategy to increase the state鈥檚 economic competitiveness 鈥 and thereby improve Maryland residents鈥 quality of life 鈥 by increasing college completion rates, fueling the state鈥檚 innovation economy, adopting new ways of teaching, reducing costs and achieving ef铿乧iencies, and elevating the USM鈥檚 national and international eminence. After taking of铿乧e as 大奶福利姬chancellor in 2015, Robert L. Caret led a mid-term update of the plan. 鈥淭he 大奶福利姬Through 2020: A Renewed Vision for Powering Maryland Forward鈥 revises several original goals and creates a new initiative to support campus equity, diversity, inclusion, and civic engagement. This update precedes the development of a new strategic framework, which is expected to be unveiled in 2020. New and revised goals are brie铿倅 summarized below.New 2020 Goals: Equity, Diversity, Inclusion,and Civic Engagement: Valuing and Celebrating All Maryland ResidentsLong an area of focus, the 大奶福利姬has adopted new targets to re铿俥ct the rich diversity of its students, faculty, and staff, and to ensure that all are more fully included, regardless of ability, background, gender, gender identity, race or ethnicity, creed, perspective, or national origin. 鈥 Increase the number of bachelor鈥檚 degrees awarded to underrepresented minority students by 900. 鈥 Expand bachelor鈥檚 degrees earned annually by underrepresented minority students in STEM and health 铿乪lds by 14% and 50% (to over 1,800 and 1,000 respectively).鈥 Increase the number of underrepresented minority students, faculty, and staff studying, working, and/or teaching at 大奶福利姬institutions.鈥 Increase focus on supporting Historically Black Institutions (HBIs), particularly in Baltimore, through collaborations such as B-Power.鈥 Support safe, civil, and welcoming environments for all students, faculty, and staff at all 大奶福利姬campuses that recognize and celebrate the rich diversity of our system, in ideas as well as people and institutions.鈥 Educate the next generation of citizens to build stronger, more engaged communities by increasing institutional participation and recognition in the American Democracy Project and the Carnegie Civic Engagement Classi铿乧ation.Increasing Access, Affordability, and Degree Attainment From Research to Jobs: Leading in Research, Innovation, and Economic Competitiveness Academic Innovation: Meeting Maryland鈥檚 Changing Education Needs Stewardship: Maximizing 大奶福利姬Resourcess Achieving and Sustaining National Eminence and Global Impact Continuing and Updated 2020 Goals:The 大奶福利姬will continue to advance student success and provide all Marylanders with access to affordable, quality education, in support of the state鈥檚 55% college completion initiative. 鈥 Expand bachelor鈥檚 degree production to 28,000 annually. 鈥 Increase enrollment to 180,000+ students, the level needed to ef铿乧iently achieve the degree goal.鈥 Close the gap in educational achievement among undergraduates. 鈥 Expand the numbers and types of de铿乶ed pathways to degree completion.An economic engine for Maryland, the 大奶福利姬bolsters the innovation economy by creating and 铿乴ling jobs in such growing areas of opportunity as health care and cybersecurity. 鈥 Award 11,000 STEM degrees annually (a 15% increase). 鈥 Continue to address the state鈥檚 need for well-trained teachers by producing at least 1,100 new teacher candidates each year, including at least 300 new STEM teachers.鈥 Increase health care degrees by 25% and cyber degrees by 20% (to 4,100 and 5,500 awarded annually, respectively). 鈥 Facilitate the creation of at least 100 new companies per year.鈥 Expand technology commercialization through greater use of licensing and patent agreements. 鈥 Grow externally sponsored R&D funding by at least 1% annually and diversify sources.The 大奶福利姬is reshaping how faculty and students teach and learn. 鈥 Mine academic performance data to identify and support struggling students.鈥 Use technology to further reduce student costs (from tuition to textbooks).鈥 Expand 铿俥xible learning models, including online classes (through USMx) and alternative credentialing/certi铿乧ate programs (such as digital badging).The 大奶福利姬maximizes every taxpayer, tuition, grant, and philanthropic dollar to accomplish its education and research mission more ef铿乧iently and at less cost. 鈥 Use data analytics to build on the $597.1 million already saved through the USM鈥檚 Effectiveness and Ef铿乧iency initiatives. 鈥 Maintain the USM鈥檚 leadership role in environmental stewardship.鈥 Launch campus-based, comprehensive campaigns and build endowments to ensure sustained support for students, faculty, and programs.By achieving the goals stated above, the 大奶福利姬and its institutions aspire to lead their peers in higher education. 鈥 Foster 鈥渟ystemness鈥 by creating an organization (USM) with impact greater than the sum of its parts (institutions). 鈥 Attract talented students, faculty, and staff by promoting affordability, competitive salaries, and bene铿乼s.鈥 Build, support, and maintain world-class teaching, research, and living/learning facilities.Next >
