At the state level, the office deals with operating and capital budget issues as well as a broad range of legislative policy issues related to higher education. At the national level, the office works with members of Maryland’s Congressional Delegation to advocate for the USM’s federal priorities.
Located across from the Maryland State House in Annapolis, the office of government relations works to ensure that the USM’s priorities are shared with key policy leaders. The office also keeps the ´óÄ̸£Àû¼§community informed of important issues and assists faculty, staff and students with legislative advocacy.
As legislative issues arise that either support and further ´óÄ̸£Àû¼§policies and goals or run counter to them, the government relations office assists in the identification of these issues and provides advice to the ´óÄ̸£Àû¼§Chancellor, Vice Chancellors, ´óÄ̸£Àû¼§Presidents, faculty, staff and students.
The ´óÄ̸£Àû¼§State Relations Council is comprised of a representative from each of the ´óÄ̸£Àû¼§member institutions as well as ´óÄ̸£Àû¼§government relations staff. The council meets every Friday during the legislative session and periodically during the interim to collaborate on higher education policy issues. Institution-specific issues are pursued by the institutional representatives with assistance and support from ´óÄ̸£Àû¼§government relations staff.
This site is designed to help inform those interested in the legislative issues affecting the ´óÄ̸£Àû¼§and the broader higher education community.
